Programme Structure
Initially
it is intended to offer a programme with an integrated language element
which has been developed and run by the London EVC and could lead onto
an Aston University Degree and Masters in Business Administration (MBA).
Given the
increased importance of NVQ levels 3 and 4 the course is designed to accommodate
these within the overall framework.
The HNC programme
comprises 10 units or modules whereas the Diploma comprises 16 units or
modules. Each programme consists of Core and Optional Units drawn from
the subjects given below. Both also involve a language unit.

Language Unit
GERMAN, FRENCH AND SPANISH
The principal
reason for initially concentrating on German and French is the fact that
within the West Midlands there are a substantial number of German and
French owned companies which it is hoped will become partners of the college.

Target Population
The programme
to be offered by Birmingham's EVC is aimed at company employees who are
thought could be developed into the managerial, professional and technical
cohort of the future within their companies.
Initially
it is aimed to recruit 20 students from participating companies for a
2 year programme feeding into an Aston University Degree Course.
Subsequently
it is believed the potential exists for the continuation of this HNC/D
programme and for a wide range of appropriate management courses including
graduate conversion courses.

Delivery Mode
It is intended
to run the programme on a block release basis consisting of 2 blocks of
3 days per month (Thursday/Friday and Saturday) with language training
being integrated within the block.
Indicatively
this would involve a HNC/D component of 3 days x 7 hours (9.00 am - 5.00
pm excl 1 hour lunch) yielding 210 Guided Learning hours over 10 months
with at least 30 hours devoted to individual development. A similar structure
applies to the Modern Apprenticeship and Kaufmann component, with 3 months
work experience in Europe included.
Delivery
of the above is to be firmly based on the 'Learning By Doing' concept
and this will involve extensive use of case study analysis, role playing
together with significant I.C.T. utilisation.
It is envisaged
that companies and individuals will contribute their time on a roughly
equal basis.

Pilot Launch
Using Matthew
Boulton College as the base it is intended to launch a pilot programme
based on a Higher National Certificate in September 2000 involving sponsored
employees from a suitably representative company base.
This is seen
as a sensible first stage in the development of Birmingham's European
Vocational College and one which it is envisaged would provide a firm
base upon which to develop.

Future Developments
Following
the initial HNC programme it is intended that specific courses such as
The Professional Development Certificate (CMS) and Diploma (DMS) in Management
Studies be instituted with again a strong European influence.
Also for
a different cohort a BTEC National Course would be considered with similar
content to HNC but at the appropriate level.
